The Ontario advantage
Ontario’s automotive and technology expertise, culture of innovation and province-wide network of resources makes it the globe’s top destination for automotive and smart mobility technology to thrive.
Investing in Ontario’s automotive manufacturing and supply sector
For more than 100 years, Ontario has been a leading automotive manufacturing and supply jurisdiction. In 2018, Ontario was the second-largest assembler in North America, building two million vehicles.
Ontario is the only subnational jurisdiction globally with five original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), including FCA, Ford, GM, Honda and Toyota. The province has more than 700 automotive supplier companies and more than 500 tool and die makers, making it one of the most comprehensive automotive clusters globally.
As a seasoned jurisdiction with a clear competitive advantage, players in the automotive and mobility space are looking to Ontario as a leader and driver behind the sector’s momentum. More than $1 billion has been invested in automotive technology and smart mobility since 2016, including numerous automotive research and development (R&D) centres and state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities.
Capitalizing on Ontario’s ICT, R&D and innovation hubs
As the automotive and mobility landscape converges with the technology sector, Ontario is uniquely positioned to lead the transformation. Ontario has the second-largest information and communication technology (ICT) cluster in North America, with more than 20,000 ICT firms.
With its vibrant network of post-secondary institutions, world-class talent, R&D centres, innovation hubs and connected and autonomous (C/AV) testing facilities, Ontario continues to lead the charge on advanced automotive and mobility technology development. More than 200 Ontario-based companies are already tapping into Ontario’s robust network and developing automotive technology and smart mobility solutions.
Building safer, faster and more efficient transportation in Ontario
The province is committed to building new ventures and supporting existing ones, while developing novel technologies and solutions to serve a global market. At the same time, AVIN is spearheading Ontario’s efforts to become the first adopters of these technologies by leading, testing, and supporting piloting and adoption. Working together, AVIN is catalyzing the growth of a vibrant and diversified automotive and mobility sector, and a future where roads will be safer, commutes will be faster and Ontarians will travel more efficiently.
